Fifty years strong at Golden West
Harper takes two top five finishes
An impressive list of alumni that includes Roseville High legend Evelyn Ashford, Marion Jones, Bob Beamon, Stacey Dragila and Jeremy Wariner has made the Golden West Invitational track meet one of the premier events each year.
This year, the 50th annual event featured some of the most highly decorated athletes from high school across the country, whose prior performances qualified them for the Adidas Golden West Invitational field. Those runners, jumpers and throwers gathered for high-level competition at Folsom High School’s Prairie City Stadium Saturday.
While nationally acknowledged high school runners like Jordan Hasay of Mission College Prep in San Luis Obispo, who is the state record holder in the girls 1,600-meter run, and a three-time winner in this meet, there were plenty of local runners for fans to follow.
Oakmont sprinter Jazmin Harper was solid once again, finishing second in the 400 (55.52) and fifth in the 200 (25.25). Harper just completed her sophomore season at the Roseville school, so she will be back to thrill Sierra Foothill League fans for two more seasons.
Granite Bay’s Christine Zavesky, another sophomore fresh off a trip to the state track meet, finished second in the B section of the 800 with a 2:15.65 time.
Woodcreek pole vaulter Kayla Kamaka and Granite Bay’s Katie Zingheim once again went head-to-head with Del Oro’s talented Mackenzi Landry, and this time Landry finished ahead of her SFL rivals with a top vault of 12 feet, 1 ½ inches. That was good for second place, while Kamaka was third (11-09.75) and Zingheim fourth (11-03.75).
The Timberwolves also saw freshman Jacque Harvel deliver a strong performance as she finished second in the freshman 400-meter run (59.15). Shayna Powless of Roseville (5:32.03) finished fifth in the freshman mile.
The Tigers Jordan Magnusson qualified for the boys A section 200-meter dash and ran an impressive 22.82 for seventh place and Granite Bay’s Spencer Thibideau was 12th in the boys A section 800 (2:01.16).
Another rising local star, Oakmont’s Edixon Puglisi, ran sixth in the boys freshman mile with a time of 4:43.58.
