Halloween is supposed to be a fright-night. But nothing like this.

Roseville residents in one neighborhood are being urged to check their children's Halloween candy after a trick-or-treater reportedly found a hypodermic needle in his bag of loot.

Police Spokeswoman Dee Dee Gunther said officers are investigating the incident to determine whether it was malicious, a prank or a mistake.

"It was still in its packaging. It wasn't a used needle," she said.

No one was injured in the incident, and the needle has been turned over to police.

David Larson, representative of the Blue Oaks Neighborhood Association, issued a neighborhood alert to an e-mail list of surrounding residents on Monday. He said so far, only one needle - a Becton-Dickinson PrecisionGlide 30-guage - had been reported by

trick-or-treaters.

The child was trick-or-treating only on Mt. Tamalpais Drive, located off Big Bear Drive near Diamond Creek Elementary School, Larson said.

The needle is encased in a plastic sheathe and the child thought it was justa stick of gum, Larson said. It wasn't placed inside candy but rather was "just thrown in there," he said.

"I don't care how you spin it, how could you allow such a condition to even occur?" Larson said.

Anyone with any information should call the Roseville Police Department at 774-5000.
