Two-time Democrat Party congressional candidate Charlie Brown takes D.C. Homeland Security post
By Gus Thomson, Journal Staff Writer
Charlie Brown, seen in this file photo from the 2008 election, has accepted a Washington post.

It isn’t the way two-time 4th Congressional District candidate Charlie Brown initially envisioned it.

But the Roseville resident is going to work in Washington, D.C.

Brown has let supporters know through an e-mail that he has accepted an appointment from the Obama administration. He’ll soon start work in the nation’s capital at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

Brown, a retired Air Force lieutenant-colonel, was a strong Democrat standard-bearer in the 2006 and 2008 election. He came from virtual obscurity to narrowly lose to veteran incumbent Rep. John Doolittle in 2006. In 2008, with Doolittle retiring amidst controversy over his connections to lobbyist Jack Abramoff, Brown took on Republican Tom McClintock and again lost in a close election.

Brown said the new post will mean he and his wife, Jan, will have to relocate. He has worked for the Roseville Police Department and, before that, was with the Air Force for 26 years.

Brown won’t be breaking ties with Placer County.

“We will be keeping our home in Roseville and expect to be back to the 4th District frequently,” Brown said.

And in a message directed at supporters, Brown was effusive in his thanks.

“Jan and I will never forget your tireless support, your kind words of encouragement and your generosity of time, resources and spirit these past four years,” Brown said. “Together we have begun to transform the district we are all proud to call home.”

The Obama hiring wasn’t being welcomed by Tom Hudson, chairman of the Placer County Republican Central Committee. He referred to Brown’s presence at a rally in 2006 in Sacramento involving those for or against an effigy of a soldier being displayed outside a home.

“He’s exactly the type of person the most extremist, leftwing president in our nation’s history would appoint,” Hudson said. “Charlie Brown is someone who shows up in a military uniform at an event where American soldiers are hung in effigy.”

Brown’s response in the past to that criticism is that he wasn’t wearing a uniform and that he wasn’t a part of either side of the demonstration that day. He couldn’t be reached for comment Wednesday after the written announcemen was issued.

Todd Stenhouse, Brown’s spokesman in both campaigns, said the new post is a logical fit for Brown and his extensive and unique experience in areas like military intelligence.

“I think he was born to serve and I know of no better fit for Charlie to continue a lifetime of service for the security needs of the United States,” Stenhouse said.

Another moronic appointment by Barrack Obama, I look forward to removing this guy from office.

Is this the guy that goes to war protests?

Congratulations, Charlie...Go forth and serve boldly and with integrity....You will be leaving the small minded folks here in the 4th Congressional district behind you with nothing to do but to watch more Glen Beck shows

No, he was the guy taking gunfire and his son was too, while the rest of the Republican Party decided to go awol on human rights and respecting other's race, religion, and gender.

Now we vets have a voice. On May 15, 1975 Charlie Brown, flew his helicopter to rescue my unit 2/9 from Koh Tang, Cambodia. 5 helicopters were shot down in a very hot LZ but Charlie's mission was to rescue the Marines that survived the landing. He took major fire but held his position. The Marines couldn't leave their positions as they were under heavy fire. He's lucky to be here and in my eyes he is a hero. It took cajones to do what he did. Disrespecting Charlie Brown is like spitting on the last 43 names on the Vietnam memorial wall.

Thanks for your service Colonel. Brown. All of us veterans of the battle of Koh Tang salute you.

Good Luck Charlie Brown,,, Hey, I think I read those words is a comic strip... AHH maybe I am day dreaming. Charlie, let us know when Linus gets his blanket cleaned will ya. Since you will be living in roughly the same area now.

ChuxxR; Nice tribute to Charlie Brown, apparently he did serve with distinction during his military career. I respect that. But, don't care for his style of politics.

Charlie is pro vet and fights for better armor and smarter weapons for our troops. Thanks for honoring his service.

Thank you Canyon Rat and ChuxxR for your heartfelt tributes to Charlie Brown. The weak-minded naysayers on this blog have no idea what a true war hero Charlie was. Funny, I don't remember McClintock or Doolittle serving...just devouring from the public trough. Cowards all. Good luck in your new endeavor Charlie...we know you'll represent our country well.

Brown is an idiot!!!! When will even the crazy Democrats realize that?

5% of all campaign contributions Charlie Brown received he donated to veterans charities. The total donations from Charlie to Veterans charities during his last campaign was more than $94,000.00. What have you done Methwarrior that would put you in a position to pass judgment on the intelligence of a person who acted in so noble a way?

Dear ChuxxR Interesting and thank you for your post. Mr. Brown sounds exactly like the kind of man who shows up in military uniform in the face of extreme danger and enemy fire to protect his fellow soilders and country. If I remember correctly he did not use insults or smears during his campaign. Others who have insulted him in this story may want to consider the merits of a real man and follow his example.

If Methwarrior had half the brains and even a fraction of the courage that Charlie Brown has maybe he would then realize that Charlie is a warrior for the USA and not just going after dime bag cranksters like himself. Grow up and get a real job....

Methwarrior.....WHAAAAT? I'm thinking you should know!! On an IDIOT SCALE of 10, you're striving for zero, and good luck on your endeavors, FREECKIN IDIOT. Sorry for that, kinda, ya got to me Methman, lost my head....however, ya can't there again.

Jongreen: Are you really asking a question or planting the seed of discontent, hard to know with you. Frankly, I don't care how difficult your return from the big valley may have been. I was in service during the same time. So was Charlie Brown. It doesn't make me bitter towards todays peace efforts. Especially after what we've endured with Bushman and his bullys. Bury the bad thoughts and get on board....the "peace train" man. Come on! The path isn't well defined, to be sure, but if we work together, it will be better than it would be with the war mongers.

EMPTY HEADS

Peace comes from military strength. We have peace in our homeland because of our strength. Who are the "war mongers"? Right now they are radical islam.

Methwarrior, let me guess... you are fighting FOR meth, yes?

Boy, this hatres on both sides has to stop. We are all Americans, entitled to our opinions and grateful to live in the greatest country in the world. The insults are plain pathetic.

Loomis:.....great post ,

Jongreen: By no means am I suggesting anything other than a strong military, and I've used the term warmongers to loosely. It's a reference to military strategies that prevailed in the previous administration

I worked with him when he was a police records clerk at Roseville PD. No one should make light of anyones service except the veteran. I thank him for his service, but he is a man with a grudge. I hope he will be differnet from my experience with him and focus on his job instead of spouting his far left beliefs. There is a time to work and there is a time for political discussion and he had a hard time drawing that line.

We should all be proud that one of our own is in Washington trying to make a difference. I for one am glad that Charlie Brown is finding his 2nd calling. Its more than a little sad that people like Tom Hudson and Jon Green want to hurl more insults instead of just moving on. I've heard of bitter losers before, but rarely have I heard of bitter WINNERS. Congratulations, Mr. Brown!

jabipc, you mean the strategy approved by the democrat congress and the one that is continuing? Where is the headline that reads "Radical Islam attacks Fort Hood soldiers and civilians under the Obama administraton"?

Teaparty Ferengi Strike Force Deploys Again in comments.

Wait, they're missing the MAFscot.

He's in ... Canada. lol.

When is "voted present" going to make a decision?

Congratulations, Charlie Brown. You tried to help your supporters and the Local Limitedsby getting elected; now you can help them by getting appointed. Twenty-six years of service to the people is apparently no enough for a person as devotedto the general welfare as you are.

Jon Green and Tom Hudson are two people who could do our community some good service by moving to Washington or Calafate, Patagonia, or to a houseboat on the Drake's Passage.

And to think that there are some morons who would have turned their back on Charlie had he marched yesterday.

Charlie is not a liberal. Where do you guys get this stuff? Obviously none of you have met the man. But then some of you (YS) believe Bush is a liberal. isthattrue, tell me one of Charlie Brown's "far left beliefs".

Charlie has seen the waste and negligence in the military. He promotes; Better military intelligence, communication between air, sea and ground forces and most of all he supports the troops and veterans.

Fishdella, You are getting emotional. Typos and miss-spelled words in your post. Perhaps Mr. Brown can help "Voted Present" to make a foreign policy decision.

JonGreen: It seems it's you "getting emotional". These two wars were jammed down our throats by Bush/Rove and other neocons. And now we're simply looking for the best way out. My choice would be to just leave too but much would be lost in the dust wake. Sorry the headlines just don't suit you. I'm personally really tired of this "liberal media" crap, Beck, O'Reilly, on and on. I believe there has been as much said as is known or can be said about this freek and his ties to "Radical Islam".

Regarding typos you mentioned in someones post, their all over this little AJ blogosphere. Everyone else just seems to except them and move on. You seem very bitter.

Jab1pc, You have got to be kidding. Would you like the names of all of the Democrats that voted for the war?

What is expected on this forum? What the liberals started was to have diversity, the problem that they didn't realize would happen is with diversity comes divisiveness. The extremists on both sides get their jollies on articles like this. Have fun kids!

p50:...As I said, it was jammed down our throats, force fed with lies and deception Are you diminished, don't you remember? There was an air about it, if you didn't support the village idiot you were unpatriotic. And even yet, there is a senseless and ridiculous liberal stigma with regard to patriotism. Patriotism does not belong solely to the conservative base as they would have you believe. Unfortunately, they do very little to stir the "all for one, one for all" desire.

You speak of liberal name calling,...it came directly from The Rebublican play book, and at this point, it's necessary to survive. For as long as I remember, the general conservative point of view has been "in your face" and "my way or the highway". Case in point, neocon bumber stickers appeared long before liberal bumper stickers. Liberals tend to be "live and let live" individuals. I'm liberal, not for a particularly strong political reason but because I don't like the way conservatives do business. Give me a reason to be a moderate and I will meet you there.

And so, in an effort to tone down the rhetoric, I propose that dialog be primarily directed to the original post. Quit sniping and cross sniping. Speak to the issue or start a new thread in "letters to the editor". Rat on me as much as like, It will be accounted for as time permits. I see my time on the podium is about up...have a nice day, or a nice stew, matters not

Jab1pc, I appreciate the tone of your post. I understand that you are a liberal. I, however, am a conservative, and I see things so very different than you do. It has been my experience that liberals have a problem with the truth. They tend to be more dishonest. Please don’t take offense; you shared your opinions of conservatives based on your life’s experience, and I am simply doing the same. A perfect example of this is the whole lie about the Democrats not knowing about Iraq, them stating that they were lied to by President Bush. We know that they were cognizant of the information that was brought to President Bush. We know that Nancy Pelosi was aware. Don’t you remember? In my opinion, liberals are too easily recruited by our enemies and, consequently, become our enemy. Many liberals have a bad habit of not taking responsibility for their actions, which is problematic when living in a society that has many freedoms. Of course, they will embrace socialism or even communism, as it resonates with their lack of responsibility. Where did I “speak of liberal name calling”? Are you not watching the “my way or the highway” taking place from the liberal wing of the Democratic Party? How can you miss this stuff? It’s “in our faces,” as you say. I admit my 11/11 post was inappropriate, and I apologize, but there was no snipe in my 11/12 post. I was simply pointing out the misconception of your statement. Enjoy the day; it’s a beautiful one out there.

Patrick50: Thanks for taking the time with the above post and for not ragging me like a dog toy. I was having a particularly bad day, I'm afraid I took it out on you. The name calling thing was not directed at you even though it seemed to be. I do believe the general tone of the population of recent posts is becoming largely more vitriolic and personally I would like to see it lowered a notch. Not necessarily to the "ho hum" level, just not gut wrenching. Spirited and lively conversation is beneficial for all. I do intend to enjoy this day inspite of it's proximity to yesterday. Enjoy your day as well.

Ok maybe far left beliefs was not the right set of words. An example how about complaining that a picture of president Bush was on someones desk. Like it or not he was the president and it was perfectly appropriate. There are many more examples and I believe some of his intra office emails were published. I worked with Mr Brown for years and liked him, but like I said before he holds a grudge. I don't know if it is with the military command or people of certain political beliefs. My point was that I hope the tax payers get actual work out of him and he just doesnt sit around the office making sure everyone is politicaly correct.

isthatthattrue, you sound like the one with a grudge. If Charlie was critical of our military command they deserved it. If he didn't like your personal belief's it is most likely you are out there on the fringe. Your efforts to push an unsubstantiated account of Charlie's behavior show your character. I know guys like you. Unable to stop with the jokes, barely able to restrain your disdain of the new and the different people you must deal with. Smirking behind their back because you feel superior. You feel they don't have the right. You hate affirmative action.

Am I close. Spit it out man. Quit throwing innuenedos. "I believe some of his emails were published." "I hope the tax payers get actual work out of him and he just doesn't sit around the office making sure everyone is politically correct." And you say he has a grudge.

Jab1pc, I agree that the raging posts have risen lately. It starts with posts like Chuxx’s, throwing empty insults at people. I thank you, isthattrue, for your inside information. Don’t mind those that continue to “bash” with insults. They are angry; it is their own problem. You will never get an apology form this guy.

Patrick, what is it? Did I hit to close to home? Never mind. Here's a quarter now go away.

No Patrick50 you are wrong. It started with a leader of a central committee insulting a man who rescued Chuxx unit in combat. It is unfortunate that the local leaders don't use a bit more discretion in their comments. So far no one has come up with any specific legitmate reason why this guy is not qualified for the job.

I could care less about insults, this is a forum for people to speak their mind. I guess the people trying to turn what I said around on me forget that I said I like Mr Brown. My comments are observations of the time I spent with him thats all. ChuxxR you sound like a very loyal friend to Mr Brown, but no one is perfect. I stand by what I said which is very simple. I worked with Mr Brown my opinion is my opinion. The complaint I talked about (and others) is a fact, you could probably get the information using the freedom of information act.

In many cases when an officer retires with the rank of Lt. Col., It means that his evaluations did not merit promotion to full Col. This is not always the case but as a general statement it is usually correct. I am also concerned with Lt. Col. Brown's appearance at a war protest.

isthatrue and Jon, Thanks! Your responses are reasonable. Brown is a good man and he will do US well in Washington.

JonGreen: We all rise to our level of competency, or incompetency as the case my be. Did anyone mention his rank in this thread? It's getting quite lengthy and I don't have the energy to read back. If they didn't, why would you bring it up now? It seems pertinent to mention military service with regard to his new post, but it feels like a cheap shot to mention rank or failure to achieve rank. Complain about peace rally's as you feel the you need, but mentioning his failure to achieve rank, dude, that's just rank. And yes, JonGreen, I know you didn't say it directly, but innuendo makes the shot it even cheaper.

That would leave you with 50 cents to last the week…………

Hmm. Why is everything so polar here? I am not sure I have ever heard reference to Near Right and Near Left. I understand people wish to distance themselves from concepts they don't agree with, but why not try to close the gap with some commonalities; or at least reduce the labeling...

Let's see how the man does in his new position before judging him.

Oh, and I one final though....I know the concept may seem oxymoronic, but you can oppose a war and support your troops and government...I can love my son and not agree with his actions....same basic thing ;) Enjoy your week folks!

P50: ....You be way awesome dude, your humor rises significantly to a higher level....and tanks, oops, I meant and thanks. I'm very seriously kidding, Does that sound right....I mean correct....is that one of those freekin oxythings,....?

Have a good day my right-winged friend. Right winged, that would be as in only one wing, right?....Damn, I just can't get past it, must be the wine that I feel is necessary before logging in to the AJ site.

Jab1pc, You are too funny! That was hilarious. I’ll have to try a couple of glasses of wine before I post sometime. You’re alright in my book. :)
