Tigers can't escape first-quarter hole
Falling behind by 12 points in the first quarter in its Thursday opener against the host team at the Mesa Verde Tournament was too much for the Roseville High boys basketball team.
After playing poorly in the first half, the Tigers recovered with a better second, but there was just too much of a hole as the lost 57-50, dropping Roseville to the consolation bracket.
Nick Schwyzer scored 15 of his 26 points in the fourth period as he tried to bring his team back, but after being down by as many as 17 points in the third stanza, the late run fell short.
“We gave ourselves a chance late,” said Roseville coach Greg Granucci. “We defended much better in the second half, but that first quarter just killed us.”
Jordan Magnusson added 14 points to the Roseville effort. The Tigers face Pioneer at 5 p.m. Friday night.
