No. 35 Late Model driver Matt Scott racing No. 29 Jason Fensler.

It was a fantastic Late Model race at All American Speedway in Roseville Saturday night, with No. 29 Jason Fensler taking the win after a great battle with No. 35 Matt Scott.

With an invert of seven, Fensler started from the outside of row one and took the lead on lap one. He was followed by No. 61 Shannon Mansch, No. 72 Michelle Nagai, No. 17 Jonathan Mawhinney, Scott, and No. 11 Juan Pitta. By lap four, Pitta was sitting in third. On lap 12, Mansch took the lead, but Fensler took it back on lap 13. A caution came out on lap 13 when Nagai spun.

On lap 15, Pitta and No. 20 Bobby Grewohl got together between turns three and four causing Pitta to hit the front stretch wall. Pitta exited the track with sparks flying out from under his car. Scott moved up to third, and Pitta came back on the track right ahead of the leaders, making it three-wide racing.

Scott and Fensler started their battle racing side-by-side down the backstretch on lap 37, with Scott taking the lead on lap 38. It had been clean racing between the two, but on lap 40, Fensler got into Scott, bumping him out of the way to steal the lead.

The officials put Scott back in the lead for the restart with six laps to go. The lineup is Scott, Fensler, No. 51 Chris Scribner, Grewohl, Mawhinney, No. 31 Justin Henry, Nagai, and Mansch.

On the restart, Fensler played with Scott taking his time to get on the gas. Fensler finally hit the throttle and gunned it for the lead, with Scott on right on his bumper. With four laps to go, Grewohl and Mawhinney got together and Grewohl was disqualified from the race because of too much contact with drivers over the course of the night.

On the restart, the No. 42 driven by Brian Keck spun and another caution came out. On lap 47 the field was under yellow again and Scott found himself shuffled to third behind Scribner. On the restart, Scott raced back up to second, but there was no time to catch Fensler. Fensler took the checkered flag, followed by Scott, Scribner, Mansch, and Mawhinney.

Scott proved to everyone again how great of a driver he is. He raced clean and he was patient working his way up to the front. Scott sits first in the Late Model point’s standings, 29 points ahead of Mawhinney.

The Bomber division had a heck of a race, too, with No. 77 Bomber driver Erick Ray winning.

“Seven is my number tonight,” said Ray, referring to his car number (77), the number of motors he’s had to put in his car this year (7), the year he was born (1977), a seven car invert, and the fact that coming it to Saturday’s race, he was 77 points out of first in the points standings.

"We worked so hard on this car," Ray said after the race. "I want to thank my brothers Rick Anable and Gene VanZandt for all their help. I couldn’t have done it without them.”

Ray also won the second heat race earlier in the night.

He said running side-by-side with No. 22 Keith Hopkinson was a blast, and that on the last caution, he gave him a thumbs up for the fun side-by-side racing, and for racing him clean.

No. 05 Jill Schmidt qualified number one, but with an invert of seven, Ray was on the pole with Hopkinson right beside him. At the green flag, Ray took the lead and Hopkinson settled in behind him. On lap 11, No. 92 Mark Anderson moved to second. On lap 20, Hopkinson got second back when Anderson spun. Then on lap 24, Hopkinson took over the lead from Ray.

On lap 26 Ray took the lead back, and on lap 28, No. 3 Jim McGinnis crept up and took over second, with Hopkinson falling to third.

It was heart-pounding racing until the checkered flag flew for Ray. McGinnis finished second, Hopkinson third, Anderson fourth, and point’s leader No. 37 David Thompson finished fifth.

No. 15 Jason Philpot held off a hard-charging Scott Winters to win the 40-lap Modified feature race.

“It feels good to get back in the Winner’s Circle,” Philpot said. “I wanted to get the lead, get some distance between myself and the rest of the drivers, and then pace myself. I knew I had to get ahead as far as I could.”

This is Philpot’s fourth win of the season.

Philpot started the race on the pole with No. 2 Ryan Peter on the outside of row one. Peter got the lead on lap one and two, before Philpot took over. By lap seven, Winters had worked his way up to fourth, and on lap 28, Winters took second from Peter. Philpot was able to hold Winters off for 12 laps to get the win.

No. 23 Street Stock driver Richard Poppert, Jr. got a big win on Saturday.

“It’s been five years since I won a feature race,” he said.

Poppert started fifth, while No. 6 Spencer Emerson led the field on lap one. On lap two, No. 80 Bryan Tomerasson took the lead.

On lap six, Poppert moved up to fourth after bouncing around a bit. On lap seven, No. 14 Wayne Crossland got the lead from Tomerasson. On lap 10, Poppert moved up to third, and on lap 15, Poppert took over second from No. 8 Matt Cockrum.

Poppert moved into first on lap 17 and never looked back. His car seemed to have improved substantially this week. On lap 20, No. 08 Mickey Owens had moved up to second. Owens was on Poppert’s rear bumper, but Poppert was able to hold him off and get the win. Owens finished second, Crossland third, No. 50 Chris Lambert fourth, and Cockrum fifth.

Next Saturday, July 31, All American Speedway will present the Toyota/TRD Late Model 100 lap race. Expect a lot of Late Model entries in what is sure to be another thrilling race. Modified, Street Stock, and Bomber racing will also be racing. For more information go to: www.allamericanspeedway.com.
